    Wireless Access

You can access the Huntsville Public Library (HPL) wireless network with your personal laptops, PDAs, and other mobile Internet devices during the Library's regular hours of operation. The Library's wireless access points, also known as hot spots or WiFi, are unsecured connections to the World Wide Web.

All wireless users are expected to act in a lawful and respectful manner. By connecting to the Library wireless network, users are required to conform to the conditions outlined in the Huntsville Public Library's Internet Use Policy

Use of the Library's wireless network is entirely at the user's own risk. HPL will not be responsible for any compromised information or loss through use of its wireless access. This includes, but is not limited to:

    • Electrical surges
    • Disruptions to wireless service
    • Loss or theft of the wireless device

      Please NOTE:
The Library cannot assist you with your laptop, card, or configuration, nor can the Library accept the liability of handling your equipment. The Library will not be held responsible for any damages sustained while using your laptop/wireless device within the Library's premises or while using the Library's wireless network.

As the Library's wireless network is not secure, information sent to or from your laptop can potentially be captured by someone else.

    • It is your responsibility to protect your device from viruses and hackers (e.g. by up-to-date anti-virus software, firewalls, etc.)
    • The Library recommends that credit card, online banking information and passwords NOT be transmitted while using the wireless network
    • The Library assumes no responsibility for the safety of equipment or for laptop configurations, security, or data files resulting from the connection to the HPL wireless network
    • Printers are not available on our wireless network. If you need to print, save the file to an external storage device (i.e. floppy disk, CD, or USB drive), and then print from one of the Library's computer workstations.

    TO CONNECT:
To use HPL's Wireless Internet connection by using your own laptop, you will need:

    • A valid HPL library card and a PIN number or a Guest Card (available at the Info Desk for a small fee).
    • A wireless network interface card, 802.11a/b/g.
    • Configuration for your laptop to use the Library's Internet connection.
    • Compatible headphone if you plan to use audio files.

    Step 1 -
Change your laptop's Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties to "Obtain an IP address automatically" .

    • Windows XP Instructions
    • Windows 2000 Instructions
    • Windows 98 Instructions

      Step 2
Open your web browser. HPL's logon page will be displayed.

Enter your 14 digit library barcode number (do not enter spaces).

Tab down to the password field. Enter your secret 4 digit PIN number (usually the last 4 numbers of your home phone)

Once you have been authenticated, a page advising that the wireless service is not necessarily secure will appear. You will have to click acceptance in order to continue to the wireless network.
