Books For Newborns
"Next to hugging your child, reading
aloud is probably the longest lasting experience that you can put into your child's
life. You will savour
it long after they have grown up."
Jim Trelease, The New Read-Aloud
Handbook (Penguin, 1989)
Books for Newborns was
established in 1989 by a group of women teachers in Muskoka. We
believe that
- Children should be introduced to books at
birth because their lives and their parents' lives will be enriched
through the shared experience of reading.
- When parents read to their children from
the beginning, they help to create lifetime readers.
- Being read to on a regular basis while in
the arms of a loving parent is an emotionally secure experience for a
child.
- The child will associate books with warmth,
nurturing and cuddling.
The volunteer group researched and put
together a package to encourage parents to read to their children from
birth. Volunteers deliver the packages to babies and their parents in
the hospital.
In 2001 the Friends of Huntsville Public
Library and the Huntsville Public Library became partners in this
valuable initiative.
